Taking classes in college can teach a person a lot about what their strengths and weaknesses are. For instance, there are some people who are absolutely wonderful at problem-solving and figuring out equations and chemistry problems. They breeze through those things like it’s nothing, while there are others who struggle with angst just to get the basics down. But even though these types of subjects can be very challenging, almost every academic pursuit toward a degree requires some class exposure to these subjects.

There was once a time when being called a “geek” was considered negative or derogatory. Not anymore. Traditional universities and even online colleges are now full of those geeks who are excelling in their subject areas and are in high demand by other students to help them with their studies. The geeks have taken a special place in the academic setting and are leaving a path for many to follow. So, how can you study like the geeks?

A love for the subject is the first thing that any geek has. They virtually live, eat and breathe what they love and become masters at it. You don’t necessarily have to master all subject areas, or even love them, but if you can show intensity and concentration toward the one subject that interests you, your study skills can and will increase dramatically.

Focusing and concentration are other traits that geeks have – and they’re worth mimicking. They are not easily distracted and know that they need to stay focused to achieve their goal and be productive. Yes, geeks have fun too, but they know when it is appropriate and place their studies first. You can see success with practice, but you will certainly have a new-found respect and appreciation for what it takes to study hard and see results.

One of the most difficult lessons for young people to learn has to do with finances and handling money in a responsible way. As a parent, you may be justifiably concerned about giving your teen access to the family’s bank account, yet it is very important for young people to learn how to handle credit cards.

A great way to teach about finances in the real world is with a prepaid credit card. You can still control the most crucial part of this life lesson — the amount of money your child can spend. Instead of getting your son or daughter an extra credit card or debit card, which risks potentially large purchases, a prepaid credit card allows you to create a budget for your child.

Start with an amount that gives your teen the ability to make some purchases without doing any serious financial damage. That will vary from family to family, but an amount in the $200 to $500 range is often a good place to start. Look for offers for prepaid, or secured cards. Credit standing doesn’t matter with these cards because they are loaded with the customer’s own money. However, in all other respects, the cards are the same as your debit or credit cards. The card companies report monthly to credit card bureaus and charge for late payments, for example.

Lay out ground rules for your teen when the card arrives — what kinds of purchases are acceptable and what kinds are not. Let your child know how long the initial balance must last before any more money will be placed on the card. Then, take some time to go over the monthly card statement with your child and order the teen’s credit report after a few months for another financial tutorial.

There are many reasons that companies hire MBA holders. The degree is a test of both intelligence and endurance. Earning the degree shows that the holder is willing to make sacrifices for his or her future and do more than just launch a career, go work and hope for advancement. A graduate business degree has many advantages, but studies alone cannot teach a person to become an effective manager.

The selection criteria for admittance to business school includes GMAT scores, college performance, extra curricular accomplishments and work experience. Business school students are self-selected. They chose to follow the path to higher earning jobs and hope that a MBA will lead to greater wages.

Business schools select their student from applicants that have spent hours on GMAT prep time, and most candidates at top schools boast a combination of high GMAT scores and sparkling grade point averages. Good managers are usually smart, and the GMAT does measure intelligence so the test provides some measure of screening. But the test is better served for discovering exceptional students rather than great managers.

Management involves working with people and understanding how to handle their strengths and weaknesses. MBA holders might be stars in some areas, but dealing with people might not be one of them. It is like a great basketball player that cannot understand why lesser players don’t excel once he becomes a coach.

People skills can be taught, but the coaching does not matter if an individual does not have the aptitude to understand and deal with people. There has not been a test developed to determine this type of ability, and in terms of business there will likely not be for years.

Schools have attempted to turn business into a something that is purely scientific. While studying figures and market trends assists in making business decisions, managing people is about more than just numbers.

Anybody planning to attend a business or graduate school should be preparing to take the GMAT. The Graduate Management Admission Test is an essential part of the graduate or business school application process, and high scores are everything. Your GMAT score can dictate whether a college will admit you, which school you’ll get into, and even how much you’ll pay. GMAT test scores are one way that schools evaluate the qualifications of applicants, and some schools will even offer scholarships based in-part on high scores. Taking the standardized test is also a good way to find schools. Many schools will actively contact applicants with high test scores.

So how do you make sure you get a good score on the GMAT? Well, the most important thing is to study and prepare for the test. You should start preparing at least six months in advance. The problem is figuring out exactly what to study. Don’t procrastinate and try to cram everything into the last week before the test. The test is four hours long and covers a wide range of material. Many people neglect to study simply because they don’t know where to start or what material to cover. You might try to get an idea about the test from somebody who has taken it before, but even then you would find it difficult to cover all the material.

One solution is to take a GMAT prep course. Having all your study material organized and your study environment structured for you is invaluable. A GMAT prep course can help you make sure to cover everything that will be on the test. A prep course for the GMAT will give you comprehensive study material, including questions mirroring the ones on the test, and expert advice. Don’t waste your money on the test fees only to score low because you didn’t take the time to prepare.
